Local Plant Nurseries

The mild climate of SW Scotland, influenced as it is by the Gulf Stream, means that our area is particularly well endowed with specialist plant nurseries and botanical gardens.

One of the finest nurseries in the area is located next door to Glenholme Country House – Elizabeth MacGregor – Violas & Cottage Garden Plants. Elizabeth has a wonderful, specialist selection of herbaceous plants that is sure to tempt you if you’re a gardener.

Visit Cally Gardens and Nursery too – 15 minutes drive away in Gatehouse of Fleet. The owner, Michael Wickenden is a knowledgeable plantsman and plant collector, and his magical, unruly walled garden is home to a wealth of unusual species, some of them grown from seed brought back from Michael’s collecting trips to hidden valleys in China.

In the centre of Kirkcudbright, visit the garden of Broughton House – once the home of Hornel, who lived here during the early 1900s. The National Trust’s Threave Garden near Castle Douglas is also worth a visit, and a little further afield you will find Logan Botanical Gardens, Glenwhan and Dunskey Garden – all near Port Patrick, and easily visited on a day trip.
